COVIDNOMICS

It’s been almost 2weeks since the lockdown was announced but prior to that we’ve had our children home for days which means that the use of basic utility continues unabated. While away at work it would be difficult to manage some amenities like electricity, data, and water. This is the time to put our most known accolade “all Ghanaians are managers” to good use. Most schools have resulted in sending home works on specific subjects to parents to be given to their children to attempt and submit before the close of each day.

While this initiative is very much welcomed it is important for parents to manage the use of data around this time. Again the Ghana Education Service has dedicated one of the GBC channels GLTV for home tuition and continuous learning which would mean having the television set on all day depending on the number of children and their ages. During this time it is advisable to minimize or put off completely electric fans and air conditioners to save power and open all windows to allow in the fresh air as TV sets usually genetic heat.

There is no doubt that electricity, data, and water would be the most needed amenities we will need to stop the spread and reduce the numbers of the COVID 19 aside food but while we keep safe during this lockdown, how prudently can we manage the limited resources. We are grateful to Mr. President for the promise of free water and electricity for the next 3months but please be guided in your use of water in spite of this promise as there may be pressure on suppliers. If possible wash all dishes at a go after breakfast, same after lunch if there is, as most of us are eating under control to manage weight among other reasons and the same after dinner.

Continue to do your laundry in bulk (if possible weekly) to manage water, detergents, and electricity for those who use washing machines. Reduce the usage of water in flushing the toilets (urine and feces) by making good use of the toilet flushing knobs (the small one is for a pee and the big one is for poo), also ensure that no pipe is licking and if it is, close the stopcock valves and use a bucket to fetch water to flush. Again pour little available strong detergents like power zone in the toilet bowl to control the stench of urine and this can be flushed after 2 or 3 times of urinating depending on the number of people in a household. For a start, take a thorough bath before bed and raise your body in the morning to manage water, bathing gel, and soap.

Since there isn’t much movement, don’t waste water to wash cars if possible cover your cars with a tarpaulin if you have them.
I hope this is helpful?
